Rainfall Runoff & Flash Floods

With the rise of cheap drone LIDAR data and the awareness of flash flood risks on the level of local authorities came the demand for Navier-Stokes based CFD software to follow the rain drops. It startet with simulations of smaller city districts and its surrounding catchments on „one square meter“-scale.

Meanwhile we answer every year questions even on building scale: Complex roof structures of e.g. exhibition hall complexes or sports center roofings lead to the question: Where is the rain going to? How strong should the rainwater collectors be?

Rainfall runoff on complex tin rooftops: the profile ridges do not follow the slope lines in this case due to the architects decisions.

The shallow water equations have their limits on steep gradients and very low depth. But new laboratory experiments where used in the last years to extend the usability.
